Congratulations to Sophiee, who was the 2D Student of the Week!

Elfie delivered letters from Santa today - well, it turns out, Santa was a little busy, but he had his elves reply and boy, did they spill some North Pole secrets!!  Thank you to the generous parents who supplied the food for our Christmas Brunch.  It was a great launch to our 2D Christmas party.

We love PJ and Movie Day!!!  Thank you to Mr. Coffin and Mrs. Kloschinsky for providing all RBES students with this special afternoon.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season.

Today Mrs. Kloschinsky made a special Christmas card with the students of 2D.  She is a scrapbooking expert and we were so grateful that she shared her expertise (and fun tools) with us!

It was Magnet Toy Day in 2D.  Thank you to the 2D families and RBES teachers who lent us magnetic toys and games.

In Math, we continued our exploration of polygons.  Students identified the number of sides and vertices on various polygons.

There will be no word sort or assessment this week.  Instead, we will be working on a holiday syllable sort in class.

Congratulations to Tyler, who was the 2D Student of the Week!

Today students began working on a top secret Christmas project.  Thank you again, to the MacKay family for their donation of wood cookies for this project.

Students also continued their magnet exploration.  Through the experimental process, students identified objects which were attracted to magnets and those that were not.

In PE, Mr. Coffin led students in a fun Snowman relay!

Student completed their Santa's Stuck writing today.  Stop by our classroom anytime to enjoy a humorous story!

Students also used magnets to explore our classroom.  Through this students identified several materials which are not attracted to the magnet: skin, hair, wood, glass, plastic, and paper.

It was a sad day in 2D; today we bid farewell to Miss Mullan.  We wish her all the best as she completes her last semester at the University of Alberta and we sincerely hope our path cross again.

Bee-Bots are always fun and this morning, Miss Mullan led students through a lesson on sides and vertices.  Students identified the number of sides and vertices in each the digital numbers from 0-9.  Then they programmed their Bee-Bot to move in a way that creates the number.

In Science, we launched our unit on Magnetism.  Students learned that a magnet is any object that produces a magnetic field.  They also identified five types of magnets: cow, bar, ring, wand, and horseshoe.

Oh no!  Santa's Stuck!  Students began using their graphic organizer to create their December writing.  I can't wait to share the finished products with you, after hearing only the first few ideas, I can tell these stories will be hilarious!

After reading the classic Jan Brett story, we conducted an experiment to determine if mittens are in fact warm.  To the surprise of many students, the mitten was not warm, but it was an amazing insulator.  After completing this unit, students all understand why we ask them to put on their warm clothing when it's chilly outside!

In science, Miss Mullan completed the Hot and Cold Temperatures unit with a "show what you know snowball fight" .  The hands-on experiments and demonstrations made this unit a real enjoyable one!

In Math, Miss Mullan lead students through a digital lesson on straight and curved lines.  Students used Google Drawings to create and sort the two different types of lines.

The Christmas Elves thank you for your 2042 donations!  Way to go, RBES, your generosity will make a difference in the lives of many local families this holiday season.

In Math, Miss Mullan and the students created triangles, rectangles, and squares using Geoboards.  If you enjoyed it in class, check out this online Geoboard program

During Social Studies, students put their knowledge of Meteghan to the test!  They created the first slide of their Communities in Canada presentation.  At the end of each unit, students will demonstrate their learning by adding text and images about the important aspects of the land, history, traditions, and people from each community.

Students tested their Hot Chocolate Storage Containers today.  Wow!  There were some very creative containers - it was evident that students utilized their knowledge of good/poor insulators when creating their projects.  Congratulations to Jace, who created most well insulated Hot Chocolate Storage Container!

In the afternoon, we returned to our regular Daily 5.  Students enjoyed signing out new books and spending time reading and writing.  Our focus this week is on chunking and using pictures to decode text.  Please be sure to watch your child's home reading bag for parent pipeline notes with tricks and tips to help your child improve his/her reading skills.

Today we had a wonderful afternoon where we took part in many adventures pertaining to Meteghan! We tried some traditional food, made a lighthouse out of clay and played a fun Fishin’ Addition Game. What a great way to wrap up our Social Unit!

There has also been a new addition to our classroom. Over the past few days we have been joined by Elfie the Elf. He has been observing us from a plant on the back counter, an Elfie booth from the window, a sleeping bag by the books and today he was in a ball pit! We are interested to see where Elfie will appear next.

In Science, we learned how our school is heated. We discovered that 7 furnaces and 3 boilers are used in our schools heating!

Just a reminder that tomorrow is a PD Day and there will not be any school. Enjoy the long weekend!

Today students created beautiful Christmas Wonderland Portraits! They used multiple mediums to compose Christmas Trees and Winter Skies, great job 2D.

In Science, we talked about ways to heat and cool rooms during different seasons. We also discussed how thermostats can heat up and cool houses. Students are tasks with finding the thermostat in their house tonight.

In Math, we continued to learn about sides and vertices and identifying them on different shapes. So far, we are able to confidently identify similarities and differences between squares, rectangles and triangles.

December 4, 2018

Today we performed our Christmas Concert! Huge thank you to everyone who came out and supported us, we loved sharing our hard work with you all.

In Science, we learned about how different animals stay warm with insulators that are specific to their body. Ask your child what insulator a rabbit has to stay warm in the winter.

We have returned from our Adventure to Meteghan, and we had so much fun! We learned about some awesome traditions and neat pieces of history. Hopefully we can go back one day!

Just a reminder to please look over your child's Thermos Challenge worksheet. We will be working with the Thermos on Monday, so it is imperative that it is prepared and returned by then.

Today we watched our friends in Grade 3 & 4 perform their Christmas Concert. We are so excited to do ours tomorrow, hope to see you there!

In Science, we learned about body temperature and how regular body temperature is at 37℃. Ask your child what happens if that temperature increases or decreases.

We also learned how to make a thermometer at how with materials around the house! Here is a link to the video is your and our child are interested in this activity.

In Social, we learned about tourism in Nova Scotia and reviewed some fun activities we could do on our trip! As our trip comes to a close, we are reminiscing about some of the great memories and things we have learned on our journey.

~Miss Mullan~

Reminders:
- Tomorrow is the Grade 1&2 Christmas Concert (1:10pm & 6:30pm).
- We are still accepting food and toy donations for the Christmas Elves.
- There are no word sorts this week.
- There is no school on Friday, as it is a PD Day.

Today in Science we learned about insulators. We discussed how some materials are better for trapping heat than others. Over the next week the students will work to build their own thermos that will keep hot chocolate hot! Please read over, sign and return the purple sheet that came home with your child today.

In Social, we learned about different goods that are produced in Nova Scotia.

In Math, we finished learning about vertices. Ask your child how many vertices are in the letters of their name!
