HAPPY EDUCATION WEEK!

Amazing days begin with a healthy breakfast and a good book!  Thank you to the Education Week committee, who organized a delicious breakfast for all RBES students and staff.  We enjoyed having breakfast together and then reading our favourite stories from home.

Also, thank you to the Devon Lions Club members who were in our school reading today.  Mrs. Bobbi read us two stories, Dogosaurus Rex and Hugs, both of which gave us the giggles!

We have only 4 library classes left, so be sure to return books every Monday (or before) so your child is able to enjoy new books for the final few classes.

The May newsletter is now available online.

Congratulations to Hanna, who was the 2D Student of the Week!

Also, congratulations to Damien, who was the BOKS Kid of the Week!

The 2C and 2D performers rocked their rendition of HONESTY today at the morning assembly.  Thank you to all of the family members who were able to take time from your busy schedules to come and cheer them on!

This afternoon we had the opportunity to participate in the Grade 4C Wax Museum, where the explorer statues spoke and told us about their history.

In Math, we are continuing our hard work and focused instruction on adding double digit numbers to 100 (both with and without regrouping).  Students are using manipulatives, open number line and the algorithm method to solve these tricky equations.

Note: Our doubles test has been postponed to next Friday.

Next week is Education Week, here are some awesome activities we will be participating in:
Monday: PJ and Pancake Day (wear your PJs and bring your favourite books to read) & Lions Club Readers

Since we didn't have school on the actual day, we celebrated Earth Day today.  Students created an artistic masterpiece out of recycled materials.  Then we headed outdoors to pick up litter around the school grounds.  We hope you will all do your part too! Some things you can do are: walk, don't drive, throw litter in the trash, conserve water, turn off the lights.  If we all do a little, we can make a big difference!

Parents, you are going to love the shape poems that are coming home today!  We used word art to create these masterpieces and I am sure your children will want to make more at home, so load up your printers with ink!

Megan lead our second Kimochi class today, where we were introduced to Lovey Dove.  The wise wisdom from today's class was: Friendly faces create friendly places.

Reminders:
- Spelling test tomorrow
- Return home reading tomorrow
- No school on Friday

It's DRUM FIT WEEK!  Students were getting in touch with their inner drummer today during gym.  It's so much fun to move to the music!

In our poetry class, students created shape poems today.  It is tricky to create these poems by hand, but students did an amazing job creating and presenting today.  They are excited to make digital versions tomorrow!

Former Les Bucherons performer, Ian Porteous, was at RBES today to share with us the Cultural Wheel presentation. The Cultural Wheel is made up of four quadrants, folklore, community, constructivism and celebration; his presentation today explored all of these quadrants, as students participated in the journey through story, music and dance.

In Math, we began learning about double digit with regrouping.  We launched this concept using manipulatives.  It's tricky to remember to trade/sweep 10 cubes for 1 rod, but by the end of the lesson we were having great success!

Cinquain poems were the focus of our writing today.  Students created a poem and illustration, then shared their masterpiece with the class.  The creativity of 2D students always amazes me!

Also, a giant WELL DONE to all students who participated in the RBES Celebration of the Arts Finale this morning.  2D did an outstanding job on the xylophones.  Way to go!

This afternoon, students created their second poem of our Poetry unit.  This masterpiece is called Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring and we are hopeful that Mother Nature heard our poems and will bring us nicer weather.

2D showed our support today for the Humboldt Broncos by wearing our jerseys.  We also watched an amazing tribute by Tom Cochrane during our morning announcements.  Our hearts are with those affected by this tragedy.

It was our honour to have the JMHS Drama Troupe visit and share with us a little teaser from their upcoming performance of Newsies. We also had Micheal come in to teach students about improv.

This evening was a proud moment at RBES.  Students and staff have worked hard in preparation for the RBES Celebration of the Arts Gala and tonight it all came together.  Thank you to the parents who came and enjoyed this special event with us.

It was a banging good time this morning, as Mark Kuntz, the drummer performed for students.  We then had an opportunity to work in small groups and he taught students how to play the drums.  It was an amazing experience!

In Math, students are working hard to solve double digit addition equations (without regrouping).  Thus far, they have learned to do this using manipulative, algorithm method and the open numberline.  Ask your child to teach you the open numberline method at home this evening.

Magnets are oh, so cool!  Students explored bar magnets, cow magnets, ring magnets and horseshoe magnets today in science.
