WOW!  We have reached the end of our first month of school!

This morning students had an assembly with Mr. Larson, students learned about the importance of being kind, even when the situation is challenging.

In Math, students played Domino Add'em Up using dominos to solve addition plus one equations.  This is a game that can be played at home using a piece of paper, pencil and set of dominos.  Grab the materials and ask your child to teach it to you tonight!

Congratulations to our friend, Ty, who participated in the  Cross Country Championship today in Wetaskiwin.

September 29, 2015

Today was our first Tasty Tuesday of the year!  Students learned how to read a recipe and also the terms: title, ingredients & directions. We sliced apples, then dipped them into caramel and sprinkles!  It was a crunchy, juicy, gooey & colourful experience!  All of the Tasty Tuesday recipes, photos and reviews will be complied into a recipe book that your child will bring home at the end of the school year.

In Phys. Ed. Mr. Larson has spent the past two days working with students on ball handling skills.  Ask your child to show you the figure 8 leg pass at home or the triple clap ball catch!

In Social Studies, students learned about the bodies of water that are near each of the four communities we are studying.  The hardest body of water is the Atlantic ocean along the Meteghan shoreline!

In library we read a story, Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen.  This concept has been the focus in 2B over the past two days.  We have spent an extensive amount of time discussing the importance of being an active listener.  2B students are working on the listening with both their ears and eyes.

PThis morning was our first assembly of the year.  Congratulations to Emma, who was the first Students of the Week for 2B!

The focus of our day was Terry Fox.  Students completed activities about this Canadian Hero and also participated in the Terry Fox Walk/Run through the trails of Devon.  It was a fun day and I am proud to announce the 2B raised $44!

September 24, 2015

Today in Social Studies, we looked at the land in each of our four communities.
Devon - along a river, many trees
Meteghan - rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, forests
Saskatoon - rolling hills, few trees, good soil
Iqaluit - no trees, rocky, permanently frozen ground
Reminder:  Tomorrow is our Terry Fox run, please ensure your child is dressed for the weather.

During Daily 5 time, students have shown great progress in their Read to Self stamina!  Over the past two days, we began working on our second of five Daily 5 activities - Read to Someone.  "Of all the choices children participate in, Read to Someone is often their favorite.  Reading with someone helps readers, especially developing readers, increase areas of comprehension, accuracy, fluency and prosidy.  It also increases reading involvement, attention and collaboration. What's more, children love partner reading and readily participate with books of their choosing." (www.thedailycafe.com)

In Social Studies, we talked about the climate in each of the 4 communities we are studying.  Students chose which type of clothing they would pack in their suitcases as we planned a "trip" to each of the locations.  After our bags were packed, we hopped onto an "airplane", a "bus" and a "car" to travel to each location.  It took us 11 hours to get to Meteghan by airplane, bus and car.  It took 8 hours to get to Iqaluit by plane.  Our shortest trip was a 1 hour airplane ride to Saskatoon.  What fun adventures!

This morning in Math, we continued our review of basic facts +/-1.  Students played Rollie Equations with a number dice and an operation dice.  The two groups with the most correct equations at the end of of our allotted time was: Alex/Brooklyn & Nathan/Ethan!  Way to go teams!!!

In Social Studies, we talked about the four communities we will be studying and located each of them on the map.  Our entire year will be focused on the communities of: Iqaluit, Meteghan, Saskatoon & Devon.

In Phys. Ed. students learned a new game called Chicken Checkers. This week of gym games is going to be fabulous!!!

Reminder: Hot Lunch orders are due tomorrow.  Information is available HERE

Today students signed out new Daily 5 books that are at their independent reading level and were very excited to read today; we achieved 9 minutes of read to self stamina!!  This is very exciting for our class!!!

In Phys. Ed., students learned a new game with Mr. Larson called Shark Attack.  They had a great time being fishes and trying to avoid being eaten by the sharks.

In Math we began our week long basic fact focus +/-1.  Students learned a new game, Big Boss, where they worked with a partner to solve addition and subtraction facts based on this focus.

Reminder:  Tomorrow is our library class, please be sure your child packs his/her books so that new ones can be signed out tomorrow.

September 17, 2015

Today was a fabulous day of learning!  In Math we wrapped up our first week long basic fact focus (0 +/-1) by learning a new game - Horserace!  We also learned a new Math term, attribute (characteristics that describe an object), students created a pattern that had two changing attributes (colour and shape).

This morning students participated in our second Fire Drill; much to our disappointment, the fire drill occurred during our Phys Ed block!!  :-(  Students handled the situation very well and seemed significantly less emotional about the event.  Way to go 2B!

Tonight is Meet the RBES Staff (5pm-7pm).  I look forward to seeing you all later this evening.  Also, please remember that there is no school tomorrow.

Today we used the Chromebooks for the first time in Grade Two.  Students were able to successfully log on, access their drive and create a drawing titled "Picture of Me".  We will completed our project tomorrow and hope to have them on display for everyone to see at the Meet the Staff night on Thursday.  A reminder, if your child does not have headphones at school (not earbuds), please send them by tomorrow.

In the afternoon, students created Kandinsky Trees.  This fall creation was based on the works of Wassily Kandinsky.

September 14, 2015

Today we continued working with the concept of "small moments" in our writer's notebooks.  Students brainstormed their favourite thing in the whole world, then told me three details about it.

We had our first Fire Drill in the afternoon.  Students did a great job, but even with practice and warnings, the event is a little frightening.  In 2B, we talked about it before and after to ease tensions surrounding the drill.  Additional info on this is coming home by email from the office.

September 11, 2015

This morning was the first Friday assembly of the year.  Mrs. Kloschinsky discussed respect and buddies.  Regular Friday Assemblies & Student of the Week will commence on September 26.  I will send an email to notify you if your child is receiving the award.

Since the weather was amazing, we had Gym outside today with Mr. Larson.  Students enjoyed playing Snap Crackle Pop!

Enjoy the weekend, it is supposed to be beautiful out!!

September 10, 2015

Students had a wild (and sweaty) time in Gym today playing Doctor Dodgeball!  Thank you to Mr. Henderson and Mr. Larsen for setting up this fun activity!

In the afternoon we continued working on our maps.  I am looking forward to seeing them come together tomorrow.

The focus of our day today was on Zones of Regulation.  We reviewed the 4 colour zones (Blue, Green, Yellow and Red) and take about the emotions or feelings that relate to each zone.  The key to our lesson was that the best place to learn is in the Green zone and that to maximize learning and enjoyment, we want to strive to be in that zone as much as possible.  Students were also introduced to a sound meter that we will use in class to monitor the noise level.

September 9, 2015

Today students had their first small group assembly with Mrs. Kloschinsky.  This is something that will happen every Wednesday for the entire year.  There will still be a whole school assembly on Friday, but this smaller format mid week provides her an opportunity to focus on character education with a targeted audience.

In the afternoon we began our social studies mapping project.  Students learned the terms: title, compass rose & key.

I am seeking parents to volunteer to bring the ingredients for Tasty Tuesday in November, December, January, February, March, May and June.  Please email me directly if you are interested.  Thank you in advance, without you, we can not do this fun activity!!

September 8, 2015

Today we continued to work on our stamina during Read to Self.  I am proud to say, we have reached the 3 minute mark!!!

In Math, we continued to explore the concept of patterning and focused on the core, the repeating elements of a pattern.  Students created patterns and then used a string to circle the core. This is an activity that you can practice at home easily with any household objects or food items.

My favourite part of everyday is the first 10 minutes after lunch, this is when we curl up and enjoy a chapter from our book.  Right now we are reading a great story - Ready Freddy Tooth Trouble!!

We ended our day spending quality time with friends!

September 4, 2015

The first week of Grade Two has come to an end.
Today we continued our Daily 5 introduction by discussing ways to read a book (read the words, read the pictures).  Your child will likely come home talking about "Daily Five".  Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read and write. Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students.  When it is up and running smoothly, students will be engaged in the Daily Five, which are comprised of: Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading & Word Work. There are very specific behavior expectations that go with each Daily 5 component.  We will spend our first weeks working intensely on building our reading and writing stamina, learning the behaviors of the Daily 5 and fostering our classroom community.  I will also spend time learning about your child’s strengths and greatest needs as a reader in order to best plan for each student’s instruction. (www.thedailycafe.com)

In Math, students used a variety of manipulatives to create patterns.  The focus of Math over the next month will be on patterning (pattern core, repeating patterns & increasing patterns)

If you have not yet completed the following, please do so and return them to school on Tuesday:
       - t-shirt payment
       - A Million Words or Less
       - student form package
       - transportation note

September 3, 2015

Our second day of school flew by!  Today we enjoyed the beautiful fall morning and played soccer relays and games in the field.

Students created their self portraits for their class t-shirts.  Thank you to the parents who have already sent in their shirt payment!

As part of our Daily 5 introduction, we established a gathering place and learned three ways to read a book.  Students also wrote stories about their summer vacation.

September 2, 2015

WELCOME to 2B!  I am incredibly excited to have such a wonderful group of Grade 2 students and am looking forward to all the learning that will take place in room 12 over the next 10 months!

Today we drank jitter juice, practiced routines, took selfies, participated in a school wide assembly and spent the afternoon singing and moving with Mary Lambert.

Your child is bringing home and agenda and blue folder, which are jam packed with important notes and information.  Please take a few minutes this evening to review the notes and do not hesitate to email if you have any questions.
