Today we honoured the legacy of Terry Fox.  The morning began with a school-wide assembly, where Mrs. Kloschinsky and Mr. Coffin shared videos and stories about Terry Fox.  Then we created a Terry Fox flip book where we summarized the morning's learning.  In the afternoon, we put on our walking shoes (and boots!) and hit the pavement to walk in memory of those who are fighting and those we have lost to cancer.

A special Thank You to the Devon's Lions Club for the healthy post-walk snack.

Remember, Monday is Orange Shirt Day.

The Grade 1s went outside today looking for signs of fall.  We identified the colours of fall, the textures of leaves, and we witnessed firsthand the effects of wind on the falling leaves. Be sure to check out the photos in our photo gallery

In both grades, we often use cards, dice, and dominoes to play games which reinforce our learning.  I encourage you to keep these materials handy at home and your child can teach you the games as we learn them.  Additionally, the math addition and subtraction strategy games are available on our blog.

In Math, the Grade 2s are continuing to explore the concept of adding zero.  Today we played a game using dominoes, ask your child to teach you at home!

We have been hard at work each morning reviewing the letters and their sounds.  Thus far, we have reviewed p, u, o, m, x, a, d.  We look forward to continuing this learning over the next 20 days of school!

In addition, students have been strengthening their fine motor through focused letter formation review.  It is important for students to have strong fine motor and accurately printed letter formation.  If your child is struggling with these tasks, I am able to send some extra practice home from the Occupational Therapist, please email if you wish to have these sheets to work on with your child.

Enjoy your long weekend!!

Today the Grade Ones began their Jump Math unit - Sorting and Attributes. In this unit, students will learn about attributes and apply their learning to data management, geometry, patterns, and measurement. They will sort objects into groups based on the objects’ attributes and learn how sorting can help them be organized in real-life situations. Students will apply attributes to geometry by recognizing that circles are curved the same everywhere and that circles can have different colours, sizes, and designs. They will also apply sorting skills to geometry when they sort circles by colour. Students will apply attributes to patterns by asking what is the same and what is different, and use attributes in measurement by comparing sizes.

We have talked about Good Fit Books and the Carpet Bell, so today we were prepared to launch into Daily 5 Stamina building.  The goal is 10 minutes of Daily 5 Read to Self, today we successfully achieved 5 minutes and 11 seconds.  A note will be coming home on Monday explaining Daily 5.  It is also available HERE

September 5, 2019

Today the Grade 2s began their JUMP Math Unit Numbers to 10.  In this unit, students will review counting (this includes equating written numerals, quantities, spoken numbers, and numbers written as words). Students will also review the notion of one-to-one correspondence, or “pairing up”—for example, given a set of pencils and a set of erasers, there are the same number of pencils and erasers if you can pair the erasers with the pencils and are left with no unpaired pencils or erasers. This notion also leads naturally to the concepts of more, fewer, and less (in physical quantities as well as in number). Students will also review basic concepts of addition and subtraction, including adding and subtracting with zero. The focus of the unit is numbers from 0 to 10, although some questions involve numbers beyond 10.

Both classes learned a Math game called roll and draw, where they rolled a dice and drew the number of objects that was represented on the dice.

In the afternoon, students created their Stick Man Portrait.  They are available for viewing outside our classroom.

Today we had our first four All About Me Bag shares.  It was great to see some of the students' favorite things!  Once the student presents, he/she will bring her bag of items home.

The Grade 2s began their PE block today and the Grade 1s will begin tomorrow.  For this subject, the students will join another class, allowing the opposite grade a daily small group learning opportunity!  We are so fortunate for this opportunity!

In art, students drew self-portraits for their class shirt.  A note came home in the agenda explaining the shirt; we ask that all parents please make their Powerschool payment by Monday.

Today was a great first day of Grade One/Two!  We took first day photos, which have been emailed to each family and also are available to view HERE.

In the morning, we talked about emotions and how we felt on the first day of school.  Students chose emojis that represented their feelings this morning and then wrote about their morning.

In the afternoon, Garth Prince came and shared his love of African music with the school.  His vocal and percussion talent was amazing!

Reminders:
- Please read and initial your child's agenda nightly.  It is appreciate if you leave it open to the date and store it in the Ziploc bag.  This makes agenda time much smoother.
- Get to know me bags came home today, please ensure they are returned so your child can share his/her special items with the class this week.
- There was a newsletter that came home explaining most routines for our class.
- Students line up at the front of the school in the morning, but are dismissed from the back doors.  The closest parking is the pool.  Please ensure your child is aware of where you will meet them.  Bus students will walk together to the front of the school.

Grade 1 note: I will be going through the supplies this evening, so watch the backpack tomorrow for notes and extra supplies.

Grade 2 note: I went through all student supplies today and sent home anything that was extra.  Anything that is missing is noted on the paper that came home also.
