Congratulations to Lewis, who was the 2B student of the week!
Also, congratulations to Deagan, who was chosen as the BP gift card recipient. Please remember to send in the receipts from your family's visits to the local BP's to be entered into the next draw.
In Math today, we explored 3D shapes, talking about the terms, edge, vertex and face. See if your child can identify the parts of 3D shapes that you see around your home.

Today the 2B students took their Energize Oil Country pledge. Each student pledged to do 60 minutes of physical activity per day. The great news is that at RBES, students are doing 90+ minutes per day at school - daily PE is amazing!! However, I am still encouraging students to do additional physical activity at home (hockey, dance, skating, swimming, sledding, playing outside, etc) and record those minutes in their Energize Logs.
In Math, we wrapped up our 3D shape unit by building spheres, cylinders and cones out of play dough and then cubes, pyramids and rectangular prisms out of marshmallows and tooth picks. It is always fun when we get to eat our math!!

We are having so much fun learning about polar bears! Today we learned that a male polar bear can be 10 feet tall and measured ourselves against the polar bear who is standing in our hallway. The highlight of our 'beary awesome' day today was checking in with Chinook, Kalluk and Tatqiq, the three polar bears from the San Diego Zoo.
In Math, students used 2D shapes (circles, triangles, rectangles, ovals, squares) to create an amazing masterpiece on their Chromebook. The creativity of 2B students must be commended!

Today in Math, students used their chromebooks to continue the exploration of 2D shapes. Check out the BGRS Engaging Students website for some great links!
Today we continued reading about the veterans at the Kipness Centre. The stories of John, a Leading Seamen, Irwin, a Wireless Electrical Mechanic, and Jack, a Gunner, were unbelievable! We were especially interested by Irwin's stories of Morse Code; Google helped us find this awesome website where you are able to convert any word or sentence into Morse Code. We are extremely grateful to the Veterans who took the time to share their stories with us!
Lastly, please check out the RBES website for information on the Winter Walk, coming up Feb. 3. There is no charge for this event, but permission forms are required. They are now available on Powerschool, please log in and complete them at your earliest convenience (Due Feb. 2).
In Gym, we have been working through the dance unit. Students had fun learning the Macarena today with Mrs. Towne!

During Daily 5, all students have been focusing on the comprehension strategy - retelling. Students have a visual on the board and also in their Daily 5 bags to help with this. The Retelling Rope prompts them to verbally retell the: setting, characters, problem, beginning, middle, end and the resolution. If you'd like, there is a copy of the image below that you can print and use at home during your home reading sessions. The parent pipeline also came home describing this strategy.
You may remember that in November, we created postcards for veterans and mailed them to various Veteran's Lodges across the province. We were fortunate to receive two responses back! A letter from the Kipness Center arrived last week and it is amazing! In the letter, 5 veterans wrote back with personal stories of their lives and time in service. Today we read about Lynn, a Plotter from England, and Tom, a Pilot.

Today was another fun day of skating.
In Math, students learned a new card game called FaceOff. Elijah was extra excited when he drew the Connor McDavid cards 9 & 7, and better yet, on Connor's birthday!! This is a simple game that you can play at home with your child. Email if you'd like to have the game boards sent home.
In Science/LA, students began researching about Polar Bears. Note taking and summarizing is a new and tricky topic, but the students did great!

Today was the first day of skating! Thank you to all of the amazing 2B parent volunteers who offered to help on the ice or by tying skates. Without your support this amazing physical education opportunity would not be possible. You are the best!
In Science, students launched their new unit on Polar Bears by completing a KWL. It is outstanding to see how much 2B students already know about Polar Bears and I look forward to all of the learning we will do on this topic over the month of January.

Date Change Notice: Beach Day has been moved to January 27th.
Gym was a blast yesterday and today. Mr. Larsen is teaching 2A and 2B all about movement to music. I really enjoyed seeing all of the creative moves students demonstrated today.
In LA, we began making revisions for detail in our Small Moment stories. Students learned the author saying "When you're done, you've just begun." It is amazing to see how a story can grow when you add to original ideas! Keep up the fabulous writing!
Today we learned the term estimate. Students used a variety of manipulatives to practice the concept of estimation.
