Congratulations to Karma, who was the 2D Student of the Week!
The focus at RBES assemblies this month is spreading love and kindness. Today we were busy creating Kindness masterpieces in Art.
In Math, we completed our 3D Shape unit by making 3D shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks. This weekend, challenge your child to find objects which have these shapes: rectangular prism, sphere, cube, pyramid, cylinder, and cone.

In Math students made our 6 3D shapes using playdough. Making a pyramid and a rectangular prism are far more challenging than you may have thought!
During Daily 5, I had the pleasure of working with small groups of students on Making Words. Students were provided 7 letters and challenged to create words based on specific instructions.

I hope you all had an amazing Family Day!
Our gym has been set up to represent the Olympic grounds in PyeongChang. Students will be working on their long track speed skating, bobsled, luge, skeleton, biathlon and curling skills. I see many future Olympians in 2D!!
Today was Tasty Tuesday. In keeping with the Olympic theme, students made Gold Medals. They were a tasty alternative to real version!! Thank you to Mrs. Marrelli for providing the ingredients for today's recipe.

Happy 100 Days of School!
Today students created a brilliant piece of writing about what it will be like when they are 100. These hilarious masterpieces are available to read on the bulletin board outside our classroom. They also represented 100 in a variety of ways and made edible necklaces.

Today was our last day of skating. A huge THANK YOU to each and every parent who was able to come out and tie skates or join us on the ice. Your support is appreciated! Be sure to check out all of our pictures from skating in the 2D Photo Gallery.
Our afternoon was filled with Polar Bear Poster creating. Over the past month, students have been researching Polar Bear topics: facts, habitat, diet, cubs, characteristics, etc. Today they began transforming their point form notes into a digital poster using Google Drawings.

Today was the perfect day to talk about what to pack in our suitcases for Iqualuit. Their temperature was -39C today and we decided that it would be best to pack everything that came to school for our winter walk - snow pants, jackets, mittens, toques, scarves, boots, warm socks, long johns. The puppets that the students made were dressed for the cold temperatures of the Far North!
It was a little chilli for Winter Walk Day, but we walked quickly and kept as warm as possible. Thank you to the town of Devon for the delicious hot chocolate that we enjoyed after our walk.
Reminder that there is no school for the reminder of the week, as all teachers from North Central Alberta are off to Edmonton for Teacher's Convention. I am excited to spend two days immersing myself in professional development, I have opted for sessions focused on mental health and student wellness. I look forward to sharing my learning with you all on the blog next week. Have a wonderful extra long weekend with your little ones!

After several weeks of working with shapes and learning about sides and corners, they amazed me with their knowledge today on their 2D Shape Assessment!
We continued our discussion of Iqaluit today. Students learned that it is located in the Territory of Nunavut and will take us 7 hours to fly there next week when we "depart" for our monthlong adventure of the community.
Reminders:
- Tomorrow is Early Dismissal
- Tomorrow is the Winter Walk - be sure your child wears their warm clothes and comfortable boots!

Today was the final official whole group visit by our buddies. We have had an amazing few months with the NAX girls and hope to see them over the last few months of school, as they have offered to pop by occasionally and help. Thank you to Coach Cassea and her fabulous team for making this partnership a success!
The Little and Big buddies each created a mascot that they then turned into a stuffie. It was amazing to watch the faces of the little buddies as they turned their paper drawing into a special keepsake.

Congratulations to Sashli, who was the 2D Student of the Week!
I was away today, but heard that 2D was amazing for the substitute. They spent time today on a shape hunt around the school and also learning about Iqaluit, the next community we will be studying in Social Studies. In Science, they talked about the importance of taking care of the environment and the impacts of global warming on our planet.

Today we learned a new math game, Flip to Make 10. All you need is a deck of cards and you can practice basic fact at home in a fun and slightly competitive way! Ask your child to teach you this game tonight!
In Daily 5 we launched our final rotation, Listen to Reading; we have 4 iPods in the classroom that are loaded with books that students can either listen to or follow along with the physical books. According to the Daily 5 website, "Listen to Reading provides pronunciation and expression models that can only come from hearing fluent and expressive examples."
We love science experiments! Today we used Susie's mitten to solve the question, "Are Mittens Warm". We quickly realized that a mitten alone does not have an elevated temperature, but when Susie's hand was also in the mitten, the temperature rose. This meant that the mitten is not warm, but that it is a good insulator and trapped the heat from Susie's hand.
