Today we learned about alphabetization (ABC order). Students did an amazing job organizing words that began with different letters. Then we made it trickier by alphabetizing words that begin with the same letter. This is a concept that you can practice at home using any 5 words.

Tomorrow is a PD day, have an amazing long weekend!
Students wrote acrostic poems today about Polar Bears.
They also worked on adding two digit numbers using the counting on strategy.
Congratulations to Manya, who was the 2D Student of the Week!
Today we extended our hockey/skating themed physical education focus by playing q-tip ball.
THANK YOU to our amazing parent volunteers! Without your support this amazing week of on-ice fun would not have been possible.
We are so grateful for Miss Jenae who is on the ice leading our skating physical education classes. Miss Jenae is a University of Lethbridge Pronghorn Alumnus and also an elite level coach.
We love Tasty Tuesday!!! Thank you to Mrs. Primosch who kindly donated the ingredients for our Polar Bear Ice Cream treats.
Students love being on the ice! Thank you to the parent volunteers who joined us on the ice and also helped with tying skates!! Students are welcome to leave their equipment in our classroom for the week if they do not wish to carry their skates home nightly.
We had the pleasure of having Mr. Maltais, our Technology Coach, in our classroom today. He walked students through the practice of Coding. Using Microbit.org, students created code that made the LED lights on a micro-bit light up. If coding is an area of interest, microbit.org and scratch.mit.edu are both online program that they can use at home to develop their coding skills.
Congratulations to Karter, who was the 2D Student of the Week!
Today students completed their Ted Harrison inspired watercolour, that they began on Wednesday. Ted Harrison is an English-Canadian artist who created much of his artwork while living in Northern Canada.
Reminders:
- Monday is our first skating day. Please ensure your child brings his skating bag (containing skates, helmet, snowpants and gloves).
- Pink Shirt day is Feb 1, shirt orders are now due.
In Physical Education, students worked through 10 stations which worked on the skills of the week - rolling, jumping, and landing.
Earlier in the week we discussed Iqaluit in the early days. Students learned that Inuit of the North lived in Igloos during the winter and animal hide tents in the summer. We discussed how the shape and structure of the igloo are paramount for create a shelter that is a good insulator. Today we created igloos out of "hard packed snow" (marshmallows) and "snow" (icing).
As part of our data analysis unit, students sorted materials found around our room based on different attributes. This engaging activity required students to evaluate the size and colour of the objects being sorted.
After, we also sorted ourselves by playing a game called "What's the common attribute?".
If you have not yet completed the skating permission form, please do so at your earliest convenience. Also, we are seeking on-ice volunteers. If you are available to help, please email.
In PE this week, students are participating in "Movement and Mats", the focus includes: balancing, jumping, landing, and rolling.
In Social Studies we began discussions about the next community we will be "traveling" to, Iqlauit. We used Google Maps to determine that the best method of travel will be airplane and have booked our 7 hour flight for Friday through Air Canada. We hope you don't mind us being away for the next month!
Today was our Oilers Energize Oil Country Pledge Day. All students in 2D pledged to do 60 minutes of physical activity each day from now until March 17th. Please check our email for further details about how to record your child's activity minutes.
Welcome back!! I hope you all had a relaxing holiday filled with fun and family!
We began 2019 with an extra special delivery. In November, 2D students created Postcards for Peace and mailed them to veterans living in our province. Today, we received several replies! A giant shout out to the veterans at the Royal Canadian Legion #44, whose thoughtful and personal responses brought answers to many of the students' queries.
In Math we launched our sixth unit, sorting and graphing. As a person obsessed with data, this is one of my favourite units in our curriculum! Students learned the terms: sort, data and groups. They identified objects which belong inside the sorting circle and the commonalities between them. Each students is bringing home animal cards, attribute cards, and a sorting circle. I encourage you to try these sorting games at home. Give your child a characteristic: i.e.: Canadian animals, animals who are carnivores, shapes that have 4 vertices, polygons, etc. and have them choose the appropriate cards to place inside the sorting circle. A parent letter also came home today outlining ways you can support this unit at home.

For the fourth consecutive year, 2D will be participating in Energize Oil Country. As part of this program, each student will pledge to participate in 60 minutes of physical activity each day. We will record the physical activity minutes that are done in school and we ask that you complete the log nightly with any additional activity that is done at home. Remember, any time the body is moving can be counted (i.e.: sledding, walking home, hockey, dance, yoga, etc.). Please sign and return the consent form tomorrow. Also, we'll be signing our pledge tomorrow and submitting our photo to the Oilers - to show our spirit, students are encouraged to wear orange or Oilers apparel tomorrow.
