November 23, 2018

Miss Mullan was way today.  However, she is now teaching 80% of the day; under my supervision, she is responsible for planning, preparation, assessment, and management.  You will likely have have noticed that this week, she also took over the daily posts on our blog!

Congratulations to Cruise, who was the 2D Student of the Week!

Students began their day the WTW test.  Please be sure you review incorrect words with your child and return the signed test on Mondays.

Our morning was spent learning about communities, specifically, our community, Devon.  Students were in awe, learning about the history of Devon.  Did you know that  Leduc No. 1 was a major crude oil discovery made near LeducAlberta, Canada on February 13, 1947? The discovery followed years of exploratory failures throughout the province. Imperial Oil had spent millions of dollars drilling 133 dry holes in the previous years as only minor discoveries were made. Leduc No. 1 discovered that oil was trapped in what became known as the Nisku Formation and resulted in numerous major discoveries across the prairies. The planned town of Devon owes its existence to one of the largest oil discoveries in the world; it was founded in 1949 by Imperial Oil with the assistance of the province to provide housing and services for workers of the Leduc-Woodbend oil field. The name was chosen for the Devonian Reef formation in which the oil at Leduc #1 was discovered. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leduc_No._1 & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon,_Alberta & http://www.devon.ca/Visitors/About-Devon/History-of-Devon)  Students transformed themselves into reporters and created a 1947 newspaper encouraging workers and their families to relocate to Devon.

Wellness day was the highlight of the week!  All RBES students are placed into 12 cross-grade groups.  Each group rotate through four stations: food, body, mind and fun.  We will have two more wellness days later in the year.

Today we enjoyed a wonderful Tasty Tuesday Treat! Big thanks goes out to Mrs. Maygard who prepared our ingredients for this recipe.

In Math, we wrapped up our measurement unit. The students are now all expert measurement detectives and have a variety of skills in their toolbox when it comes to figuring out length and distance.

In Social, we started discussing traditions of the Acadian people in Meteghan. What are some traditions unique to you and your family?

In Science, we explored the term Celsius and learned about thermometers. Students will be able to read and record temperatures of different materials by the end of this unit!

November 19, 2018

Students are still hard at work preparing for the Christmas concert.  Ask your child to sing one of the songs for you.  2D will be performing: Here We Come A Caroling, Reindeer on the Roof, and Christmas Star.

In Science, students discussed the terms hotter and colder. They used these terms to describe two objects. For example: the tea is hotter than an ice cube.

Math was a filled with measurement exploration.  Students used unifix cubes to measure the distance around objects.

Today we discussed the Canada flag, we identified the two colours and the shape that is in the center.  Did you know that the maple leaf has been a recognizable and important symbol for Canada for over 300 years? It has been used to symbolize Canada, the land and its people. It is also used in the coat of arms and the flags of the Canadian Armed Force.  For more facts on our flag, click HERE

Today we had a combined Art and Social Studies period where we took on our new roles as Lobster Fishermen! We assembled and set out our lobster traps. Hopefully, by next week we will have a catch!

In Math, we worked through a measurement assessment. Students had to apply all of their tips and tricks on how to properly measure, and compare objects. They all did a fabulous job!

We continued our Kindness Writing in Daily 5. Students were to think of an act of kindness and draw it out. We have worked on our planning pages and are ready to complete our good copies. Stay tuned for the final project!

Today was the RBES Remembrance Day Ceremony.  It was a honour to be part of this special memorial, marking 100 years since the end of the First World War.

In the afternoon, 2D students created Postcards for Peace.  The 16 postcards will be mailed to the Canadian Veterans; our hope is that our messages will warm their hearts this Remembrance Day.

Reminder: There is no school Monday, November 12.

Wednesday, 7 November 2018

November 7, 2018

In Art, students created a beautiful Remembrance Day poppy field that will be hanging in the Gym on Friday.  I encourage all of our families to attend the RBES Remembrance Day Assembly on Friday at 10:45am.

In Math, students select good units for measuring length.  They recognize that we can use anything to measure length, but that not all units are appropriate.

We recently launched our MindUp program.  Each day we work on a lesson from this evidence based social and emotional learning curriculum. This week our focus is breathing.  Students are bringing home a sheet today where they drew a cartoon of a time they were angry, and how breathing could help them to calm down.  I encourage you to engage in a discussion tonight about how breathing prepares our bodies to learn.

Today in Math, we began Unit 4 - Measurement.  Students estimated length, then used non-standard measurement to identify the length of several objects in our classroom.  Click HERE for a parent letter that describes some ways that you can support your child at home while we work through this unit.

Students also learned the game, Whack-a-Number.  This is a basic fact review activity that you can also play at home with your child.  Details are available on the Mental Math Games page.

In Social Studies, students learned about daily life of the residents of Meteghan. They discussed school life, whale watching, clam digging and lobster fishing.

This month, all RBES students are hard at work preparing for their Christmas Concerts.  Please mark your calendars:
Tuesday, December 4 - Grade 1-2 - 1:10 pm and 6:30 pm

Reminder that tomorrow is early dismissal (2:21pm).

November 5, 2018

Today students will be bringing home their Rainbow Word rings in their Home Reading Bag.  These words are to be reviewed daily and stored in the Reading Bag at all times.  Students will be assessed weekly and new words will be added once proficiency has been achieved.  There is a note explaining the program coming home today and additional information can be found on the Rainbow Words page of our blog.

In writing, students created the illustration that will shape their writing for the week.  Based on the story, Try a Little Kindness by Henry Cole, students will create their own Kindness story this week.

In Social Studies, students compared the communities of Meteghan and Devon.  We collaborated to create a Venn Diagram which identified both the differences and similarities between the two communities.  We also talked about the Early Days in Meteghan, specifically the first people (Mi'kmaq) and the settlers (Acadians and British).

Students are bringing home a photo of their Christmas Card artwork as well as order form.  Please consider supporting this RBES Parent Council fundraiser.
