Today soapstone expert, Dave from Rubble-Road Soapstone, came into the school and taught the students how to create aoapstone carvings.  This is something we had been reading about all year in relation to the the art in the community of Iqaluit and it was fun to see, feel and work with this medium.  Students are excited to give their finished creations to their Dads on Father's Day.  A special THANK YOU to Ms. Faraschuk, Ms. Casteel & Ms. Jayanadhanpadmini who came and helped with our project today.

We combined Science and Math today and completed a survey of our classmates' favourite insects.  The butterfly was a clear winner.

Reminder: Tomorrow is the Bike Rodeo!  Click HERE for more info.  If you have not done so already, please log into Powerschool and sign your child's permission form.

Today we continued our Bike Safety Experience with a presentation by the Devon Health Nurse.  She came in and talked to us about the benefits of helmets and what can happen to our brain if we do not wear a helmet.  She also discussed the legal responsibility for students to to wear a helmet and ride with an adult until they are 9 years old.

In our bike safety class, we learned the hand signals: right, left, stop.  Then students moved onto the bike course.

In Science we began our comparison of Spiders vs. Insects.  We completed the spider side and are excited to work not he Insect side after we complete our learning this week.

Bike Safety Week has arrived!  Today we kicked it off with a wonderful safety opportunity; four members of the Devon Bike club came into the school to check the helmets of every student.  Wow, the knowledge that I gained today was tremendous and I hope that by reviewing the blue checklist that came home, you will also learn more about properly fitting helmets.
Click on the image below to access some great bike safety documents.

After a brief discussion about bike size and how to get going, students had a great time riding safely around the schoolyard.

Spiders have been our focus over the past week.  It was neat to learn that only 3 friends in our class are afraid of spiders.  Today we learned the body parts of a spider: cephalothorax, abdomen, 8 legs, 8 eyes, 2 pedipalps, 2 fangs & a spinerette.

Today we read a story, My Mouth is a Volcano.
Students learned four steps to help them break the habit of interrupting. This simple strategy can be reinforced both at home and school.
1. Bite down hard.
2. Breathe the words out through your nose.
3. When the time is right, breathe the words back in through your mouth.
4. Share your words with another person.

In PE, we have teamed up with all Grade 1 and 2 classes this week to engage in track and field related activities.  Today we practiced the relay races.

HATS ON! FOR MENTAL HEALTH!

"It is estimated that 15 per cent of Canadian children and youth are living with some form of mental illness, and one in five young people will deal with a mental health issue at some point in any given year. Unfortunately, studies show that less than 10 per cent of those affected young people will get help for problems related to mental health, drugs or alcohol. Often, it is the stigma associated with mental illness that prevents people from accessing the treatment they desperately need. Many people with mental illness say the stigma that surrounds mental illness is harder to live with than the disease itself.

Since 2009, the Alberta Teachers’ Association has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association and Global Television in raising awareness of children’s mental health and discouraging the stigmatization often associated with mental illness. On May 4, 2011, schools across Alberta are invited to participate in Hats On! For Mental Health, a coordinated awareness day focused on raising awareness of issues related to mental health."

Thank you to the Devon Lions Club Members for coming in to our classes and reading today.  A special THANK YOU to Miss Dorothy, who read to 2B and left us with a special book for our classroom library.
