March 21, 2016

Today we had the pleasure of having Mrs. Kehoe in our classroom again to teach the second MindUp lesson.  We reviewed the neuroscience from last class, focusing on the roles of the hippocampus, amygdala and prefrontal cortex.  A poster of the concepts can be found HERE.  The focus of today's lesson was being mindful; students also used the sparkle bottles to practice calming and being mindful.  Directions on how to make your own Sparkle Bottle can be found in our March 8 blog post.  Ask your child to share with you the difference between mindful and unmindful.

In Math, we continued to focus on adding two 2-dgit numbers with sums to 100.  This is a concept that can be reviewed nightly at home, using the same format as students demonstrated during the student led conferences.  The only supplies required are a piece of paper and a pencil.
1. Create a math equation using any 2-digit numbers that are less than 45 (i.e.: 24+35=?)
2. Solve the equation on a tens frame.
3. Write the answer to the equation
4. Solve it on an open number-line.
5. Are your answers the same using both strategies?
