Gym this week is a tricky one!  Students are working on striking, catching and tracking skills using a ball and their hands (think volleyball basics).  

In Language Arts, we began a new writing technique.  Students will focus on writing fiction using small moments.  We are using a three step process:
1. Generate an idea
2. Plan (touch and tell, share, sketch)
3. Write!
Ask your child to share their story idea with you.  

There are two exciting Easter contests happening in the library.  The fist is a candy guess.  Students placed their guesses today during library.  Mrs. Raugust provided us with a hint: it was greater than 300, but less than 500.  The second contest is a colouring contest, students are bringing home their colouring sheets today, they can be returned at any time.

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable Spring Break!  Students wrote about their week off and it sounds as though you were all very busy!

The Grade 1s spent today reviewing addition to 100, while the Grade 2s learned how to use an open-numberline to solve addition to 100 equations.  Ask your child to show you this unique way to solve the addition equation 39+68=?.

This week, students have word sort and rainbow word assessments on Friday.  The Grade 1s also have two field trips (Thursday - all day, Friday - PM), if you have not yet completed the online permission forms, please do so today.  Also, all students are asked to bring in a clear 2L pop bottle for Wednesday.  Wednesday is also early dismissal day.

Today was our Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs Day!  After a month of hard work, students were very excited to share their completed Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs stories with the Kindergarten class.  They wrapped up this project with a book release P-A-R-T-Y!!

Today was Crazy Sock Day in recognition of World Down Syndrome Day.  

The end of our CWACOMB month is near!  Today, students took their final draft from the publisher and used their editing skills to hunt for errors and make changes.  

In Math, we completed our basic fact focus on Doubles.  Students are encouraged to continue working on their basic facts at home.  This can be done through games, flash cards, oral quizzing or xtraMath.  Continued nightly practice of basic facts, with rote memorization, will aid students when working through the more complex Math Addition questions. Students have been hard at work on addition to 100 (with and without regrouping), we are looking forward to completing this unit this week.

In our exploration of the early days in Iqaluit we learned that the Inuit people lived in igloos, made of snow blocks, during the winter, and in animal hide tents during the summer. Today the Grade 2 students created Igloos.

Today we launched our Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (CWACOMB) unit!!  Students named their communities and began writing bold beginnings.  The focus of this unit is adding juicy details and editing (self and peer).  After today's writing session, students shared with a buddy and hunted for errors.  

Have you ever wondered with it look like in the middle of a math class?  Well, today I snapped a pic for all to see!  We are working hard on adding numbers to 100 using both the algorithm method (stack it) and manipulatives.  Ask your child to add any two 2-digit numbers tonight (Grade 1s - no regrouping); I think you'll be amazed!!
