February 20. 2019

Today students created word chains.  We have had a lot of fun practicing Spell-a-Thon words over the past two weeks.  I encourage you to use these strategies at home as well!  Today is the final day to practice, as out Spell-a-Thon is tomorrow!

Students have been working hard to complete their polar bear research and today they completed our research webs.  Everyone is excited to begin creating their Google Slides presentation tomorrow!

Soccer is so much fun!

Students' weekend stories were epic today!  It sounds like you all had an amazing weekend with your families!

Practicing spelling words should be fun!  Today students made words from cut out letters.

Thank you to Mrs. Dennis, who donated the ingredients for Tasty Tuesday today.  Students really enjoyed making Strawberry Shortcake Kabobs!

Our social studies unit on Iqaluit is now over, so it was time to add all of the information that was learned into the Communities Across Canada presentations that students have been working on since November.  They did an amazing job adding information about the people, careers, resources, and land in Iqaluit.

In Phys. Ed. Miss Coleman worked with students on two foundational soccer skills: dribbling and trapping.

Reminders:
- Feb. 19 - Spell-a-Thon pledge forms due today!
- Feb. 21 - Spell-a-Thon test
- Feb. 22 - Elder Florence at weekly assembly

Congratulations to Grey, who was the 2D Student of the Week!

Happy 100th Day of School!!  It is hard to imagine that we are over half way through this school year!

Today, students enjoyed counting by 10s to create a 100 Day necklace.  They also represented 100 by creating 10 groups of 10.

They were shocked to view themselves in 100 years - stop by our classroom to read the students' amazing 100 Day stories!

We also completed different 100 exercises!

Today was another cold day with buses not running.  However, it was great to have most of our class here!

Each morning, students will practice their Spell-a-Thon words using a different "fun" technique - today was rainbow writing.

Students created beautiful love themed art.  It is on display in our hallway.

We also worked hard to practice counting back in Math.  Counting Back Memory is a game that we used to review this concept.  Each student is bringing home a copy of the game that you can play at home!

This morning we began our daily Spell-a-Thon word review by alphabetizing five words from our lists. Each day, students will choose words to review - they are encouraged to choose 4 challenging words and 1 word that they are more confident spelling.

We wrapped up our Iqaluit unit today with our culminating assessment.  Students love learning about the communities in Canada and can't wait to begin learning about Saskatoon next month.

Students also worked diligently on their polar bear research today.  They read and summarized facts related to habitat, behavior, and cubs.

Sadly, the weather prevented us from going skating.  We are hoping that it warms up so we can return to the rink tomorrow!

February 11, 2019

Welcome back!  I hope you all had an amazing extra long weekend.

Today was another cold one!  It looks like we will be indoors for recess again this week.  However, we will be crossing the fields to get to the rink.  So please ensure your child has a sweater, winter jacket, snow pants, toque, and mittens everyday.

Thank you to all of our amazing parents who have offered their time to help tie skates and skate with us this week!  We appreciate you!

We launched the RBES Spell-A-Thon and completed the pre-test today.  Students are bringing home their pledge sheets, word lists, and pre-tests today.  There will be no word sorts this week or next, as students are encouraged to practice their Spell-a-Thon words nightly.

Weekly reminders:
- Feb. 11-14 - Skating (bring skates, helmet, snow pants, jacket, and mittens)
- Feb. 14 - Valentine's Day party (snack parents: Gavin, Skyla, Brodie, Tyler, and Cruise)

February 4, 2019

Today, in Math, we used a number-line to count-on.  Students located numbers on a partial number-line and then use number lines to add. Ask your child to show you how to make a partial number-line and use it to add a one-digit number to a two-digit number.

I will be away for Professional Development training for the next two days.  Mrs. Cross will be the substitute and students are excited to spent time with her this week.
