Over the next month, we will be focusing on basic fact recall using Math Fluency Tickets.  Students will begin at +0 and work their way to +9.  It is a fun, fast way to review facts on a daily basis, students love racing the clock.  Each day, your child will bring home their ticket to share with you.  Having rote recall of the basic facts makes all of the other addition and subtraction we are doing in class much easier!

Two members of the Devon Lions Club joined us today for the Lions Project Pride presentation and to present the Grade 1s with their special Canadian flag.  During the presentation, we learned two rules about owning a flag: 1. It should not be waved indoors and 2. It should not touch the floor. Please take care of your flag and wave it with pride on Canada Day!

This is a reminder that your child has access to the xtraMath.org, mathletics.com & prodigygame.com, which offer opportunities for review of the concepts taught thus far, including: sorting, patterning, numbers to 100, basic facts, addition/subtraction to 100, measurement and data analysis.  Access to these sites will remain active over the summer.

Today we continued measuring things around the classroom using a variety of non-standard measures.  Then, we ventured outdoors to take advantage of the beautiful Spring day and measure things outside!

Mr. Coffin was in our class for the afternoon, while I completed the Grade 1 year-end Dibels reading benchmarks.  This is the final step in the inaugural year of the Grade 1 reading block.  Grade 1 team is very excited that the program has been met with much success and positive feedback.  The Grade 2s will complete their reading benchmarks tomorrow morning using the STAR reading assessment.

The final 1-2E Newsletter has been posted to our website.

Congratulations to Emily, who was the 1-2E Student of the Week!

Today in Math, we began our exploration of measurement.  We used non-standard measure (unifix cubes) to measure length and height of various objects around our classroom.  Did you know that a Peyton's water bottle is 9 unifix cubes tall?

School photos are coming home today!  WOWZERS, 1-2E students are adorable!!

Today the Grade 2s hung up the beautiful, multi-medium artwork that culminates our exploration of Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit in Social Studies. And the Grade 1s hung up their root  vegetable watercolours which are part of our science unit on Plants and Animals.

The Grade 2s are hard are hard at work learning to subtract to 100 with regrouping.  This tricky concept is one that requires extensive practice to master.

Reminder to bring home reading back to tomorrow and also that it is our sort test day.

Wow, what a change in the weather!  In an attempt to stay warm and dry, we were inside all day.  There was no track or recess for students, as the wind and rain were pretty intense.

Our Language Arts unit on Poetry has been a huge hit with the Grade 1s and 2s.  Today we learned about shape poems. Students first created them the traditional way, using pencils and pens.  Then we grabbed our Chromebooks and used wordart.com to generate shape poems.

We began our A Little Birdie Told Me art project today and are eager to finish them tomorrow.  They will be on display for all to view at the Volunteer Tea next week.  We hope to see all of the amazing 1-2E volunteers there!

Twin day was officially cancelled, although today I realized that an announcement must not have gone home to the parents.  SO..... we had a several adorable TWINS in our class.  Check it out!

Bike Rodeo is the best way to end a week of Bike Safety; there is nothing more fun than riding our bike around obstacles in the arena!   Thank you to Mrs. Babb, who joined us on for this activity!

The Grade 2s also had their soapstone day today.

Yesterday, in poetry we used our 5 senses to brainstorm about Spring and Winter, today we created our poems.  Students are really enjoying this writing unit.

Boat Trial #2 went well, only a few minor modifications are needed in preparation for the final test run tomorrow.

Reminder that tomorrow is our Bike Rodeo, thank you to those who have already volunteered, everyone is welcome and can meet us at the arena at 10:25.

Boat Trial #1 happened today!  There was some excitement, but also some disappointment.  Students made many modifications to their boats and are eager to participate in Trial #2 tomorrow.

Making a car is harder than one would think!  Most Grade 1s were able to create a car body and attach tires, however, getting those tires to turn was very tricky.

Today was the first day of bike safety and fortunate for us, the weather cooperated!  Students enjoyed learning the names of the parts of their bike, doing a safety check and of course, RIDING!!

In science, the Grade 1s built cars, which they will be racing tomorrow.  The Grade 2s build their boat, based on the blueprint they had created last Friday.  Their boat must: float, carry a load and propel; we are eager to test them tomorrow.

Congratulations to Ella, who was the 1-2E Student of the Week!

A special THANK YOU to the Devon Bike Club members who came to the school today to check each child's helmet. Your child is bringing home a blue paper today with the findings.  Please remember to send your child's helmet and bike on Monday.  They are able to keep them in the gym for the week.  We will be participating in the Bike Rodeo on Thursday (10:25-10:55) at the arena, and would love to have a few volunteers.

Today we finished our secret art project and also wrapped our Mother's Day gifts.  Students are excited to share their special creations with you on Sunday.  Dads, please check your email.

Today students did their final science journal entry on their Basil People.  They had an opportunity today to trim and taste this delicious plant.

We also launched our poetry unit by having each student prepare and present the poem that they brought from home.  There were some very creative renditions of vastly different poems.

May 10, 2017

Our day began with a visit from the Health Nurse, where students learned about helmet safety and brain injuries.  We learned the 2-V-1 rule and each student received a brain stress ball to bring home!  On Friday, we will have a helmet specialist visit RBES to check each child's helmet in preparation for bike safety next week.  Please ensure your child brings his/her helmet to school on Friday.

During Science, the Grade 1s created furniture for their homes.  The Grade 2s learned about materials that sink and float, and also experimented with boat shapes using clay.

We are loving our current science units!!  The Grade 1s were busy today creating a building that contains: doors, walls, windows and a roof.  They look awesome!  Students are looking forward to furnishing their buildings tomorrow.

The Grade 2s are hard at work researching about: parts of boats, types of boats, propulsion and shapes of boats.  This knowledge will help each crew when creating their boat blueprints later this week.

May 8, 2017

Today, students began their gym/track combined sessions.  This means that the 1-2E students will be joining their respective grade for track practice, while the opposite grade works with me on a science unit.

The Grade 1s launched their Building Things unit today by looking at buildings.  We concluded that most buildings have: doors, windows, walls and a roof.  Tomorrow we will be taking this knowledge and turning a shoe box into a building.

The Grade 2s launched their Boats and Buoyancy unit today.  2E fishermen learned that their community of Meteghan has been hit by a horiffic spring snowstorm and that their boats, which they use daily, have been destroyed. Fortunately the government has provided funding to rebuild 3 boats.  So 2E fishermen teamed up, creating boat crews of 2-3.  Over the next two weeks, each crew will be working together to learn about boat properties and create a new boat that floats, carries a load and propels.

Students completed their Stacked Animal art today.  Stop by our hallway to see them!

Congratulations to Peyton, who was the 1-2E Student of the Week!

The sun was shining, so we joined our friends from 2B outside for a game of soccer!

Today we read the story, Just a Little Bit, and created stacked animal art!  We are about half way through the project and can't wait to complete the painting portion on Monday.
