Today we continued our expiration of data analysis.  Students collected data on 2B student's favourite pizza.  Then created bar graphs based on the results.  Students were then challenged to respond to three questions about the data.  This is a fun unit, and students are having a great time with it!!!

It was our final Grade 1/2 assembly today.

We also completed our Buoyancy and Boats unit with our final Trial.  Congratulations to all of the Boat Crews who were able to create a boat that floats, propels and carries a load.  It is great to see all of your hard work and modifications take shape!  A giant THANK YOU again to all of the families who donated materials for this unit.

Thank you to Ms. Casteel for her assistance in preparing the Rise and Shine binders for next year's class.  It is a daunting year end task and I sincerely appreciate the extra set of hands!  We love this part of our morning routine and looking forward to a new group of students being able to participate in it also.

Trial #2 was very successful!  Today we had 4 crews who's boat was able to: float, propel and carry a load.  Students completed their second modifications today and are looking forward to completing their Trial tomorrow.

We were also very HOPPY for Tasty Tuesday today!  Our Frog-wiches were tasty and fun!  Thank you to Mrs. Curtis for providing the ingredients.  A special thank you also goes out to Mrs. Spottiswood for assembling our Tasty Tuesday Cookbooks.

Today was filled with special events, as we also had Miss Carol, from the Farm Safety Center come in and give a Safety Smarts presentation today. 2B students learned all about water safety - Boats Float, We Don't!!  Always remember the safety message from Grand One - One Seat, One Rider!

We still have a towel switch mystery that we hope to have resolved.  If your child brought home the wrong blue towel on Friday, please return it to the school.  I have your towel waiting for you here!!

Today we tested our boats.  It was an exciting day for The Captain Sparkles crew and their fabulous Glitter Boat - it was the only boat that was able to float, propel and carry a load on Trial #1.  After our trials, students came back to the class and did a gallery walk, where they provided written modification suggestions to all of the other crews.  Students used the insight they gained from the trial and also the modification suggestions from their peers to make changes to their boats.  Tomorrow is Trial #2!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

A special Happy Father's Day wish to all of the amazing 2B Dads!!!

Today was a giant mess of recycling as students built their boats!  I absolutely love listening and watching as students work collaboratively, use their boat knowledge and create masterpieces!  Students had to dig deep and use the knowledge gained over the unit about ways to make a boat: float, propel and carry a load.  We are very excited to test them on Monday.

Reminder:  We are still swimming next week!!

Today in Science, students learned the term buoyancy.  Learning about buoyancy force and boat shape are important to understanding how to make a boat float.  We also discussed three types of propulsion: paddle, sail, jet and motor.  The 2B Fishermen are excited to create their boat blueprints tomorrow!

Reminders:

Tomorrow is the RBES volunteer breakfast in the gym from 8:15-9:15am.  We are excited to see all of the amazing 2B volunteers in attendance!  Details area available HEREhttp://rbesteam2b.blogspot.ca/2016/06/june-6-2016.html.

All School Start (supply orders) are due today.

Today in science, we talked about how sinking and floating.  Students enjoyed working through this Floating and Sinking online game.  (Sign up is required in order to access this link, students are aware that their parents will have to approve and sign up for them if they wish to play this game at home).
We learned that a ball of clay sinks, but if we change it's shape, then we can make it float and carry a load!  Ask your child how many pennies their boat was able to carry.

It was a beautiful day for swimming!  Students enjoyed the lessons and I was amazed how quickly they caught on to all of the tasks placed before them.  A giant shout out to the Devon Pool staff, they did a phenomenal job today.  Please remember to send your child in his/her swimsuit again tomorrow and send a large towel in their backpack
.

Swimming Reminder

Please send your child dressed in his/her swimsuit each morning.  Students will be changing at the school and walking to/from the pool in swimsuits/towels.  I encourage students to bring a large towel - getting out of the pool and wrapping up in a nice big towel is the best feeling!  Additionally, please ensure your child has ample food for lunch this week, swimming always seems to cause large appetites.

We will be swimming from 11:30-12:00 daily.  Please feel free to come to the pool and cheer on your little 2B Fish!

Thank you to the parents who have completed the new detailed Swimming Level Request form, if you have not done so already, please click on the link below:
If your child has taken swimming lessons in the past, please send their swimming report card on Monday also.

We are very excited for a great week of swimming and learning!

We had an amazing day at Miquelon Lake Provincial Lake wrapping up our Small Crawling and Flying Animals Unit.  Students were lead through two outstanding hands-on explorations by the Park interpreters, Brian and Cala.  Brian reviewed the differences between insects and spiders and the term invertebrate; then, it was off to the forest for a bug hunt.  Cala focused on life cycles and took us to the pond to scoop up water bugs.  Thank you to our fabulous parent volunteers: Sue, Bridget, Sreeja and Megan - without you fabulous ladies, this would not have been possible!
Reminder: All photos are stored in the Photo Gallery - only a tiny snippet of the photos are posted to the blog.

June 9, 2016

Today was research day.  2B Fishermen were engaged and excited to research about: parts of a boat, types of boats, propulsion and shapes of boats.  Ask your child to share some of their knowledge with you, you will be amazed!

Miquelon Lake Reminder

Students are very excited for our trip to Miquelon Lake tomorrow, here are a couple of reminders:

Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather as these activities will take place outdoors. The current forecast is a mix of sun and clouds with a projected temperature of 17C (although we all know how quickly that can change, so please verify the forecast tomorrow morning: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca/forecasts/camping/7-day-weather-forecast/alberta/miquelon-lake-provincial-park).
Students should also bring sunscreenbug spraya hat and water

Please send a bagged lunch and snack (brown paper bag or IGA bag with your child's name on it- no lunchboxes) with your child as we will not be returning to school until the end of the day.

Thank you again to our volunteers: Megan C., Bridget N., Sue F., Sreeja J.!!!

June 8, 2016

Today we began our Buoyancy and Boats unit.  The 18 2B Fishermen were called in for a town of Meteghan meeting, where they learned about a horrible winter storm that tragically destroyed all of the boats in the harbor.  Since fishing is their livelihood, their challenge over the next two weeks will be to work together to create new boats that will: float, carry a load and propel.
Thank you to all of the parents who sent their recycling to the school!  We can't wait to begin building next week!

Reminders:
- Word sort test is tomorrow.
- Return home reading books tomorrow.
- Please complete the swimming permission and level forms.
- Check your email for important information about the Field Trip on Friday.
- School Start orders for school supplies are due June 14.

Today we continued out exploration of double digit addition and subtraction.  Students are becoming quite proficient at switching between the two concepts.  Way to go!
Please remember to review the basic facts with your child regularly.  The curriculum requires that they are able to recall addition and related subtraction facts to 10 by the end of Grade 2.

In science, we complete our Small Crawling and Flying Animals unit by creating Food Chains.  We talked about the terms producer, consumer and decomposer and played a fun online game.  You can click HERE to access it from home.

There was a buzz among the Grade 2 students, wen a web of spiderlings was discovered in front of our school.

Congratulations to Deagan, who was the 2B student of the week!

Today we began our final Language Arts unit on Fact and Opinion.  We discussed the difference between these two terms and played a game online.  Then students wrote facts and opinions about slides.  Ask your child to tell you two facts and two opinions about their supper this evening.

If you have not yet done so, please go online and complete the swimming level form, the swimming permission form and the Miquelon Lake permission form. Everyone with outstanding forms was emailed today.

Congratulations to the 2B Track Stars: Ryder, Nathan and Ethan!  I heard you did amazing at the track meet!

The students who remained back at the school were hard at work on creating an insect. Ask your child the name of their insect.  They should also be able to tell you about their habitat, whether their insect is helpful or harmful and why.

We also played baseball during our gym class!  RBES has the coolest reversible baseball gloves!!!

Reminder: School photo payments are due tomorrow.
