Congratulations to Emma, who was the 2B Student of the Week!

Today students completed their Natural Resource triaramas in Social Studies.  They used three mediums: pencil crayons, construction paper and clay to create natural resources found in each community that we are studying.  They are displayed outside our classroom, so be sure to stop by and learn more about Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit!

Next week is Education Week!  Click HERE to view all of the fabulous activities happening around RBES!

Earlier this week, students were introduced to the concept of Mindful Colouring. We have integrated this calming strategy into our daily class routines and reference MindUp and Zones of Regulation when we discuss how we feel during the activity.  According to Psychologies Magazine, out of the UK, "colouring in is an easy way to calm the mind and occupy the hands. Speaking at a mental health workshop in 2009, author, speaker and communication expert Mark Robert Waldman explained that active meditation focuses attention on simple tasks that require repetitive motion. Concentrating this way replaces negative thoughts and creates a state of peace, and many people who have a difficult time with concentrative meditation can find this easier. This gentle activity where you choose the colours to create your picture and the repetitive action of colouring it in focuses the brain on the present, blocking out any intrusive thoughts.  Meanwhile, a recent study from San Francisco State University has shown that people who partake in creative activities outside of work not only deal with stress better but their performance at work improves, too. You need only look at the massive explosion of interest in crafts such as knitting and dressmaking in recent years to see how many people are choosing to occupy themselves in such creative activities."

Tasty Tuesday today were delicious m&m, pretzel, peanut butter bananas!  Thank you to Mrs. Spottiswood, who provided the ingredients for our recipe.

Have you ever wondered what our classroom really looks like in the middle of a lesson on Goods and Services?  Today we had to stop mid social lesson to go to drum fit and this was what was left when the little learners ran out.

It has arrived - DrUm FiT wEeK!  The teachers had an opportunity to participate in a Drum Fit class last week and it was a blast!  We are extra excited to have Mr. Henderson teaching this week, he is a drum master!

Last week we began a basic fact practice called, Math Tickets.  These will be marked and sent home daily.  If you notice that your child has less than full marks, please spend some time in the evening reviewing the basic fact concept in preparation for their next ticket the following day.  The Basic Fact Strategies can be found HERE.  Also, there are many fun games listed HERE that can be played at home.

In Math, students have been working on double digit addition with and without regrouping.  Ask your child to share their learning with you by solving the following equations: 48+19= & 22+39= .

We expanded our Social Studies knowledge today by learning the terms: goods and services. Students were asked to sort a variety of pictures into the appropriate categories.

April 18, 2016

Today in Social Studies we learned the term natural resources.  Students learned about a variety of natural resources in each of our featured communities and also careers that correspond with those natural resources.

In Math, we used manipulative to solve double digit math equations that required regrouping.  Students learned to scoop up 10 cubes and trade them for a tens rod.

Prior to Spring Break, several teachers from RBES attended a Words Their Way Professional Development Session.  I bought back several new activities and so we have been changing up our Word Sort Practice and trying the new activities this week.
Yesterday, students did the activity called "Draw and Label".  Then today, they did "Write the Sort".  These are activities that you can add to your evening Word Sort Practice as well.

After several weeks without library, we are excited to have our regular Library class back.  Please ensure your child has returned his/her books so that they can choose new ones tomorrow!

April 5, 2016

Today in Math, students were introduced to the algorithm method, or STACK THEM (as we refer to it), of addition.  This is a challenging concept for many students, but with practice it will become more clear.  The most important thing is to remember our little math chant: "When we Stack Them, we always start with the ones".  Click HERE for an illustrated example of this method.  Students now have three methods for solving double digit addition equations: the Open Number-line, Tens Mat (rods/cubes) and Stack Them.  Students are working to become proficient users of all three methods.

2B is part of a pilot for the district using a program called "All About Me".  I participated last year as well, to much success.  We used it for the first time today and I look forward to sharing more with you in the weeks to come.

Reminder that tomorrow is early dismissal. School ends at 2:21pm.
