November 25, 2015

The WTW spelling test will take place on Monday next week as we are on a field trip Thursday and there is no school on Friday.  Please return all home reading bags on Monday as well - this will allow you to keep the books to read over the long weekend.

Tomorrow is our field trip to the Telus World of Science.  We will be leaving the school promptly at 8:35.  Students will be wearing our class shirts so please be sure that your child arrives at bell time (8:25) so that he/she has time to change.  Also, please send your child with a bagged lunch (a brown or plastic bag, clearly labeled with their name, no reusable containers or water bottles).

In writing we began a new writing strategy.  Students will be creating Small Moment Stories using the 'Touch & Tell, Sketch, Then Write' strategy. I look forward to continuing to develop this strategy over the next month.

In science, students explored 4 types of magnets: cow, horseshoe, ring and bar.  They also learned about magnetic poles and the terms attract & repel.

We love Tasty Tuesday!  Today students made 'Oh Canada Cookies' in honour of Canada's patriotic month of Remembrance.  The cookies, whipped cream and strawberries were delicious!   Thank you to Ms. Burton for providing the ingredients for today's activity.

In reading, students logged into their HeadSprout accounts.  This online resource adapts to the specific learning needs of each student to reinforce reading fundamentals including: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency and vocabulary.  Students have access to this tool at school and at home (log in information came home in their blue folders today).

In Science, we began the Magnetism unit.  Students had a great time exploring around the classroom to determine items that magnets were attracted to and items that magnets were not attracted to. Tonight's homework is to find 5 things at home that are magnets are attracted to.  The most exciting fact of the day was that Earth is a magnet!

Reminder: Online field trip permission and payment must be submitted at your earliest convenience.

Congratulations to Elijah, the 2B Student of the Week!

Today was twin day and there were some adorable twins around the school!

The focus of our basic facts this week has been "doubles" (i.e.: 1+1=2, 6+6=12, etc.).  Today we altered our favourite game "Make 10 on my Head" and played "Doubles on my Head."  Students love this game and I strongly encourage all parents to ask your child to teach the game, so you can play at home.

We talked about the value of social responsibility and giving back to your community.  The Grade 3s and 4s are currently collecting food and toy items for the Devon Christmas Elves (donations can be dropped off at the school over the next weeks).  In Art, we gave back to the Devon Christmas Elves by decorating letters that will be used throughout the community.

Note: My apologies, I did not hand back the student spelling test summaries. I will send them home on Monday.

Today students enjoyed the story The Way I Feel and reflected on the emotions in the story by matching them to a Zones of Regulation colour.  Our goal at school is to be in the green zone, ask your child about tools that they can use to try to get into this zone.

I have had many inquiries about changing the Dojo character.  Click HERE for directions.

November 5, 2015

Today we talked about appropriate classroom and hallway behaviours.  Students were very knowledgeable about the word "appropriate" knowing that it meant good or correct.

We brainstormed ways to move from the yellow/blue/red zones to the green zone.  Then took this knowledge and transferred it onto a cootie catcher!  What fun!  Our focus calming tool today was breathing techniques we discussed that although we know many different ways to breathe, (4-7-8 breaths, count to 10 breaths, candle breaths, etc) they all help us to achieve the same goal (retuning to green).

In Science we talked about the term absorption.  Through a class demo , students learned that not all materials absorb liquids.  Some repel liquid.

November 2, 2015

This morning, students brinstormed "A Few of My Favourite Things" (people, places, things, activities).  This worksheet will be the first page of their Work on Writing duotang and will provide them with a place to look back at when they become stumped during their writing time.

Today students were introduced to the fifth and final Daily 5 rotation - Work on Writing.  "The writing component of the Daily 5™ provides additional support children require to become effective writers. Its purpose is to provide daily writing practice."(The Daily 5, p. 107)

This evening students are bringing home three important papers: 1. WWW Directions, 2. WWW Sort, 3. Spelling City Information.  All of these are part of our weekly spelling program.  Words Their Way is an amazing spelling program which allows each student to work on spelling words at his/her independent level.  Students were assessed and are grouped based on a spelling pattern at the stage they are ready to master.  The word sort is taught to each group on Monday and then reviewed daily in class.  A second copy is sent home for students to review nightly (this task should take between 2&10 minutes to complete & it not intended to be onerous).  Students are encouraged to say the word, spell the word, then place the word in the proper category.  Some weeks the rows will have "headers", other weeks, it will not.  I have purchased a membership for your child and they will have access to it both at school and at home as a means of practicing their words, this portion of the program is completely optional.  On Friday, students will be tested on this spelling pattern.  There will be 8 words from their sort and 2 words that follow the spelling pattern, but that they did not have as a part of their sort.  The additional words are used to demonstrate that the student has mastered the pattern and is able to transfer the knowledge into his/her writing.

The November 2B Newsletter is available HERE.
